My name is John Charlie Maveli. I would like to express my interest in any formal career opportunities within your practice. I am keen to gain further clinical experience in the UK in an environment that excels in delivering and maintaining a high standard of patient centred care. I bring a unique set of skills that I believe will set me apart as a dentist and continual learner. Some of these include:
• A strong foundation in general dentistry, demonstrated by my education and clinical experience in private practice in the United Arab Emirates, United States of America and the United Kingdom.
After graduating from Ajman University in 2010, I moved to the USA and received excellent training at the International Dentist Program at Loma Linda University, California. My skills were further strengthened by my clinical experience in San Diego, where I was mentored by Dr Rich Masek, a CEREC Master and Trainer. Following this, I took on the role as the primary dentist in a private practice in North Dakota, USA for nearly 3 years. After moving to the UK, I had the opportunity to practice at Total Dentalcare, Peterborough, owned by Drs Michael & Anthony Zybutz. Here I took on the role of a general dentist, with a focus on aesthetic dentistry.
All these experiences have helped me understand the importance of working as part of a team to deliver a positive patient experience. I gained exposure into every avenue of general dentistry, which developed my love and passion for the aesthetic dentistry as well as the restorative elements of implant dentistry. I learned problem solving in the practical management of every day dentistry, whilst utilising the support and advice of my specialist colleagues and referring where necessary.
• A passion for technology in dentistry, particularly the use of CAD/CAM and scanning technologies.
This stems from my childhood, having grown up in Dubai with my parents running their own Polyclinic with Implant and Restorative dentistry as the focus. My mother is a Prosthodontist who was one of the pioneers of the CEREC system in the UAE in the late 90’s, giving me exposure to digital dentistry at an early age. I continued this interest in my education at Ajman University with my undergraduate research titled “A Clinical Evaluation of 115 CEREC Restorations placed in a Private Practice: A 10 Year retrospective study”, for which I was awarded first prize at the Annual Scientific Conference at Ajman University, 2010. This interest was further developed during my time working with Dr Rich Masek, where I had the unique opportunity to learn from him in practice and spend many hours practicing with multiple CEREC systems.
I also have a keen interest in photography and I am in the process of gaining formal certification in this field.
• A drive for continual learning and a passion to teach.
I believe that is it vital for our profession to pass on the skills and knowledge that we gain to the future generation of dental professionals. I have been involved with UCL Eastman Dental Institute’s Aesthetic Dentistry program, being a tutor for the photography classes and have also been involved in teaching Clinical Communication sessions at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. I had the opportunity to tutor pre-clinical students and have continued to mentor colleagues appearing for licensing exams in the USA and the UK. To further my knowledge, I embarked on the University of Manchester’s MSc in Restorative Dentistry, focusing on gaining insights into restorative practice based on best evidence. In addition, I am enrolled to complete a variety of short courses as part of a 5-year plan to cover recommended CPD requirements set out by the General Dental Council.
• Leadership skills, shown in my prior work experience and leadership roles in the dental community, University and church.
I am on the Executive Committee of the American Dental Society of London where we provide strategic direction for the support of members and to networks in the UK and Europe. Additionally, I am the President of the UK Chapter of Ajman University’s Alumni Association liaising with the University and promoting networking with AU alumni. During my time at Loma Linda University, I was the Class Representative for my cohort, attending committee meetings and helping support curriculum development. I was also the Class Representative for the California Dental Association, one of the largest dental associations in the USA. Along with representatives from every dental school in the state, I engaged in discussions and debate over relevant political issues affecting the profession and its future. We formed the student delegation of the California Dental Association and attended the annual House of Delegates, where I attended caucuses and committees that voted on these issues that would affect the future of our profession.
• Outside of dentistry, I am a non-Executive Director for UK Medicare Associates Ltd and George Enterprises (UK) LLP. My responsibilities include financial consultation of existing businesses and new projects, property acquisitions and disposals, preparation of annual financial accounts and IT services.
• On a personal note, I have been involved with church activities from a young age, taking an active role in music, sound and production for weekly services and larger events. These experiences have given me a quality of leadership through service that I am grateful for.
Please find attached my CV. I am happy to provide a portfolio of my work on request.
Thank you for your time and consideration
